http://www.themilpitaspost.com/local/ci_3942075
A Milpitas mosque vandalized last month suffered further damage and a burglary this month.Milpitas Police Department is classifying the crimes at Masjid Dar Al-Salaam at 90 Dempsey Road as vandalism and burglary, though a Muslim organization believes the incidents should be investigated as hate crimes. The latest incident at the mosque, which is located in a strip mall, took place between midnight and approximately 5 a.m. June 3.That night, someone smashed a glass window on the south side of the building and stole money from several donation boxes inside the mosque, according to Milpitas police Detective Pete Prolo.Due to the police investigation, Prolo wouldn't say how much was stolen."It was a very, very small amount," he said.Damage to the mosque included a smashed 8-foot by 8-foot window. The cost to replace the window was unknown, police said.A previous incident at the mosque that Milpitas police say was vandalism and not a burglary occurred May 16, reported at about 5 a.m.That morning, a member of Masjid Dar Al-Salaam discovered a side glass door was smashed, with broken glass strewn on the ground. No loss was reported. Damage to the door was estimated at $350.The incidents at Masjid Dar Al-Salaam have garnered strong interest from the San Francisco-Bay Area Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.Sameena Usman, a spokesperson for the group, said the incidents have created an atmosphere of fear among area Muslims."The Muslim community has a fear of being targeted," she said, adding Masjid Dar Al-Salaam had been the victim of a documented hate crime incident a few years ago. Hate Posters put up at MAsjid

ISLAMIC SITES TARGETED WITH ANTI-MUSLIM POSTERS - TOP Rebekah Sanders, Arizona Republic

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0614muslim0614.html

Handmade posters carrying anti-Islamic messages were found less than a day apart at two Valley Islamic locations, prompting the Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations to seek a hate-crimes investigation.During afternoon prayers Sunday, around 5 p.m., members of the Islamic Community Center of Tempe found a white poster board at the mosque with messages scrawled in black marker attacking the Prophet Mohammed and Muslims. The 3- by 2-foot sign was taped to a dumpster facing the mosque but was not on its property. No damage was found, Sgt. Dan Masters, a Tempe police spokesman, said in an e-mail.Members reported the incident to the council and to Tempe police, who took fingerprints and video surveillance tapes from the mosque.Nure Elatari, communications director for the council, said she was told the videos include images of individuals and a vehicle.Employees at the council found a similar white poster taped to their office door, 202 E. McDowell Road, at 9 a.m. Monday, Elatari said. The words, transliterated from Arabic into English spelling, distorted a common Islamic prayer about Mohammed into an insult, she said.Phoenix police have assigned the case to the bias crimes unit and have classified it as a "threat" report, said Detective Tony Morales, Phoenix police spokesman."It's really unfortunate. It's sad to see such ignorance lingering in the community," Elatari said. "It only encourages us more to promote tolerance and education."

The foiled terror plot in Toronto has already resulted in a backlash against Muslim communities across the country. In Calgary on Friday night, a group of nine men and women in their twenties banged on the doors and window of the Al-Madinah Islamic Centre before opening the front door to yell and swear at seven worshippers gathered for a late prayer. In Toronto on Saturday night, vandals smashed 30 windows at a mosque and damaged nearby cars. Toronto police called a joint press conference with Muslim leaders on Sunday to appeal for calm, saying that such attacks would be dealt with seriously and harshly by the law. The Muslim leaders also expressed fears their community would become victims of reprisal attacks. (MORE)

MOSQUE BREAK-IN FUELS FEARS - TOP Local Muslims brace for more terror falloutCarol Sanders, Winnipeg Free Press, 6/7/06

http://winnipegfreepress.com/

WINNIPEG Muslims say a break-in at the St. Vital mosque is the first of several aftershocks the community expects due to the arrests of terror suspects in Ontario.Intruders broke into the Manitoba Islamic Association mosque on Hazelwood Avenue overnight Monday. The front and back doors were damaged and there was minor damage inside, said Dr. Ghassan Joundi."With the timing, I don't think it's random," said Joundi, president of the Manitoba Islamic Association. "It was a hate crime."There were no graffiti messages left behind, but Joundi said he is convinced it's fallout from the Ontario arrests and intense media coverage they garnered."If the whole thing is true -- we're still hoping it's not -- then police agencies did a wonderful job of preventing a catastrophe," he said. "I don't think the whole community should be blamed, though."The suspects in Ontario may have Islamic names and call themselves Muslims but they have nothing to do with Islam and its belief in peace, he said.Joundi was still waiting yesterday afternoon for police to respond to the mosque break-in. He hopes police will increase patrols in the area.Other Winnipeg Muslims share Joundi's concern."We dread and fear what's going to happen now," said Rehman Abdulrehman, 30. There was a sense of relief that officials have made the arrests but that's being replaced by the fear there will be retaliation against average Muslim citizens, he said. It's already started, said Abdulrehman."There were racist comments like 'go back home' and 'terrorist.'" (MORE)

California Mosque Vandalized Again

N. CALIF. MOSQUE VANDALIZED FOR 2ND TIME - TOP Police, FBI urged to probe incident as possible bias crime(SANTA CLARA, 6/8/2006) - The San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) today called on local and national law enforcement authorities to investigate vandalism at a Milpitas, Calif., mosque as a possible bias crime.CAIR-SFBA received a report that someone broke into the Dar-us-Salam Mosque sometime prior to the morning of June 3. Mosque members say the intrusion was the second such incident in a month. Damage included a shattered glass wall, a cracked side door and broken donation boxes."Because of the repeated nature of the crimes, we urge that law enforcement authorities investigate possible bias motives for both acts of vandalism," said CAIR-SFBA Civil Rights Coordinator Sajidah Wahdy. The first incident of vandalism at the mosque occurred May 16, when morning worshippers discovered the front glass door of the mosque shattered. Another incident of vandalism occurred at a mobile home property owned by Dar-us-Salaam several years ago. The property was sprayed with anti-Muslim graffiti and the teenagers involved were apprehended.Local police, while not finding direct evidence of a bias motive, told CAIR-SFBA they have increased patrols in the area of the mosque."We have visited the mosque yesterday and are working with the Imam and board members to share crime prevention tips," explained Detective Peter Prolo. He said all leads are being investigated and additional monitoring has been set up. "I am taking the matter very seriously."The Milpitas Police department encourages anyone with information about the identity of the person responsible for either crime to contact them at 408-586-2400.CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties group, has 32 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

Americane Marine Cheer hate Song

'MARINES' CHEER SONG ABOUT KILLING IRAQI CIVILIANSSong's lyrics: 'I blew those little f**kers to eternity'(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/12/06) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called on the Pentagon and Congress to investigate a music video posted on the Internet that seems to show U.S. Marines cheering a song that glorifies the killing of Iraqi civilians.CAIR said the four-minute video, called "hadji girl," purports to be a "marine in iraq singing a song about hadji." (A "Hajji" is a person who has made the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, but the term has often been used as a pejorative by U.S. troops in Iraq.) The song, posted online in March, tells of a U.S. Marine's encounter with an Iraqi woman. It has been viewed by almost 50,000 people. The song's lyrics include: "I grabbed her little sister and put her in front of me. As the bullets began to fly, the blood sprayed from between her eyes, and then I laughed maniacally. . .I blew those little f**kers to eternity . . .They should have known they were f**king with the Marines." Members of the audience, not shown in the video, laughed and cheered wildly for these lyrics.SEE:

Comments apparently posted by other military personnel express approval for the song's contents. One comment states: "This makes me happy to be a Marine. But look out! Here comes the rest of the country to call us evil!" Other comments criticize the video as racist."Given the recent allegations that U.S. Marines massacred Iraqi civilians in Haditha and other areas, we need to determine if this video is what it purports to be," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. "The inappropriate actions of a few individuals should not be allowed to tarnish the reputation of all American military personnel."Awad called on Pentagon officials and members of Congress to investigate the video and all other allegations of such conduct in Iraq.

CHRISTIAN VANDALS SHATTER FRONT DOOR OF MILPITAS MOSQUE

Vandals shattered a $350 front door of an Islamic mosque in Milpitas this week but police say so far they have no evidence indicating it was a hate crime.Visitors who came to attend an early morning prayer discovered the smashed glass front door at Masjid Dar Al-Salaam, located at 90 Dempsey Road, around 5 a.m. Tuesday.Milpitas police Detective Peter Prolo said today police found no graffiti, notes or other evidence to suggest the mosque was targeted in a hate crime.Yet, the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is concerned about Bay Area Muslims being singled out in hate crime-related attacks because of such incidents being reported recently across the nation."CAIR attributes these incidents to existing levels of anti-Muslim bias in American society and war-related sentiment,'' the organization wrote in a statement. The perpetrator "did not leave any evidence of intrusion into the mosque but we don't know that it wasn't a hate crime for sure," Mohammad Nada, a board member of the mosque, stated.Prolo said police are investigating a string of recent vandalism incidents at a local Catholic Church. Since Christmas, vandals have thrown rocks through that church's windows three times.Because no rocks were found at the mosque, Prolo said investigators do not believe the crimes are related. No suspects have been identified in any of the vandalism."We have taken additional (security) measures," Prolo said. "We've increased surveillance and heavy patrol in the area around the mosque."Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Milpitas Police Department at (408) 942-2400.

SOUTHSIDE SCHOOLTEACHER DISCRIMINATES AGAINST MUSLIM GIRL - TOP
5/31/06

http://www.news4jax.com/news/9300683/detail.html

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville family recently filed a complaint with the school board, claiming a teacher at a Southside elementary school discriminated against their daughter because she's Muslim.

Ten-year-old Alana Scott said she was forbidden to perform with her school orchestra because of her religion. Alana wears a head scarf and said her orchestra teacher at Pine Forest Elementary School ridiculed her for wearing it and wouldn't allow her to perform in a concert.

The girl's mother, Latisha Jones, recently filed a discrimination complaint with the school board on her daughter's behalf.

Alana told her mother that her music teacher questioned why she wears her head scarf and that the same teacher was the one who refused to let her play her instrument with her classmates.

The 10-year-old told Channel 4 she has learned a lot at school, and that this year she has learned about discrimination.

"I want them to know that sometimes teachers don't know everything," Alana said. "It made me feel horrible."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations became involved in the case when Alana said her cello instructor made several derogatory comments about her head scarf.

"Why do you wear that nun thing? She explained to him this is called a he jeb, an Islamic head scarf and the reason why we wear it is for our religion. He mockingly told her, 'Why would you do something like that?'" said Ahmed Bedier of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Jones said things went from bad to worse for her daughter at the school when the teacher would not allow Alana to get on a school bus to perform at a school concert downtown. She said she believes it was because of her Muslim beliefs.

Together, Alana's family and the Council on American-Islamic Relations filed a complaint with the school board. (MORE)
